Back in the day, and not that long ago, either, a band needed a record label to make any real money. However, these days viral promotion can be a do-it-yourself proposition, with every band in the universe promoting themselves through You Tube music videos. So, if you can do it yourself as a band, do you really need to appear in MTV new music videos. Maybe for the current younger generations of music fans, getting their content online may be a lot more relevant than something as old-school as mere TV. Digital technology has given low-cost access to an explosion of new media outlets to any band with the brains and time to put together their own digital full length music videos, and they can be uncut music videos, and then cybercast them as You Tube music videos. Sites like You Tube also allow fans to e-mail bands, download their music, preview new music, check tour dates, buy merch (think of all the indie bands that live or die by merch sales) and keep up with the lives of their favorite musicians. The Internet and media like you tube music videos have already made record labels obsolete. Now, let's see what they're going to do to catch up. |
